Egg Devil: The Spicy Bengali Snack You’ll Love

By Meenakshi G on February 11, 2025

If you love crispy, spicy street food, then Egg Devil (ডিম ডেভিল) is a must-try! This beloved Bengali snack is a deep-fried delight featuring a spicy mashed potato coating wrapped around a boiled egg. It’s crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and bursting with flavor.

Often confused with Deviled Eggs, Bengali Egg Devil is completely different—it’s more like a desi version of Scotch eggs, but with Bengali spices. Perfect as an evening snack with tea or as a party appetizer, it’s a favorite in Kolkata’s street food scene.

Why is it Called “Egg Devil”?

The name “Egg Devil” likely comes from the spicy and fiery nature of its filling, which gives it a “devilish” kick. It’s also believed that the name was inspired by British Devilled Eggs, but in Kolkata, the dish evolved into this deep-fried version.

  • 4 boiled eggs (cut in halves)
  • 2 large potatoes (boiled and mashed)
